Only Compulsion Games, one of the 5 new studios introduced by Microsoft Studios (now Xbox Game Studios) at E3 2018, has yet to unveil what it’s working on, while Playground Games, The Initiative, Undead Labs, and Ninja Theory have already confirmed what their next projects will be.

The Canadian studio, which is located in the same region as Ubisoft MontrĂ©al, Cloud Chamber, and Quantic Dream, has been silent since the release of We Happy Few’s DLCs, with the most recent official information limited to the announcement of the construction of a new building for the XGS subsidiary, which had to be completed a few months ago.

However, in a recent new interview with Naila Hadjas, head of PR at Compulsion, we learned about the studio’s overall health, as well as what they’ve been working on. First, Hadjas reported that the team had more than doubled in size since being purchased in 2018, growing from 40 to more than 80 people.

Despite this growth, Hadjas says that Compulsion Games has no plans to surpass the 100-employee mark anytime soon, preferring to remain a creative and nimble firm in its current form (despite the new Compulsion headquarters supporting up to 400 employees).

During the first half of 2021, the studio relocated to its new place.

Concerning the project presently in production at Compulsion, what many previously knew was verified owing to the studio’s employment openings being reported for some time. The Microsoft subsidiary is developing a totally new IP, a single-player third-person action-adventure game.

This will be Compulsion’s first major game, and they want to use the most recent version of Epic Games’ Unreal Engine to bring their vision to reality. Hadjas further said that The Coalition and Rare assisted them in the audio and animation sectors of this extraordinary endeavor.

Last but not least, this Nova IP began production in 2019, approximately halfway through its development, thus it is not a title in pre-production. So we’ll keep an eye out for what’s to come. Phil Spencer, the current Xbox Chief/CEO, has stated many times that he is enthused about the game Compulsion has been working on, so we’ll keep an eye out for what’s to come.
