Guerrilla Games took to the PlayStation Blog on Monday, September 27th, to explain a little more about the depth of detail featured in the next big PlayStation exclusive, Horizon II: Forbidden West, which will be published in early 2022.
By delving into the facial models of Aloy, the protagonist of the Action-Adventure RPG title, Guerrilla demonstrated the evolution process in its internal DECIMA Engine, which debuted in 2013 with Killzone: Shadow Fall and was later used in Until Until Dawn, Horizon Zero Dawn, and Death Stranding.
“In Horizon Zero Dawn, Aloy rises from being the world’s least significant person, a lowly outcast, to becoming its most important. She has not only become the finest machine hunter on the planet, but she has also realized that she is the key to understanding Earth’s past and rescuing its future,” said Ben McCaw, Guerrilla’s narrative director.”
“The efforts regarding Aloy’s wardrobe (and those of the others she meets along the way) are not lost on the Horizon community. Cosplayers have been experimenting with these characters for years, bringing them to life in their own unique way and drawing on the high level of in-game accuracy to inform their material choices for their own costumes. “Guerrilla loves to provide lengthy Cosplay instructions with very accurate illustrations and explanations of the materials used to make the design process easier,” says the director. “
Despite these heroic efforts, Guerrilla assures that the PS4 version will not be sacrificed:
“We actually built and tested the game on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 at the same time because it’s critical for us as a studio to ensure that PlayStation 4 gamers enjoy an equally immersive experience.”
“With our expertise of Horizon Zero Dawn, we knew we still had certain untapped elements that might increase the realism and quality of our character assets; it’s amazing now to be able to leverage that knowledge and experience for the sequel,” says the developer.
“From a creative standpoint, Horizon Forbidden West truly stands on the shoulders of a design foundation that was effectively built at Horizon Zero Dawn,” Bastien explains.
“The most notable technological differences and enhancements for Aloy are the enhanced precision of facial and body capture, allowing for more realistic shapes and surface details on characters, as well as the meticulous increase in polygon density to depict handcrafted clothing.”
Horizon II Forbidden West will be available exclusively for PlayStation on February 18, 2022.
