It’s unknown how this will be explained in the fourth film in the series, but director Lana Wachowski recently disclosed her motives for beginning on The Matrix: Resurrections 18 years after the last installment.
In a recent panel at the Berlin International Festival of Literature, Wachowski discussed the unexpected reappearance of Neo and Trinity. She did not explain how the characters of Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will return in the story, but she did reveal her reasons for returning to the Matrix franchise, given that her sister Lilly Wachowski declined to direct The Matrix: Resurrections, stating that “there was something about the idea of stepping back and being a part of something I had done before that was expressly a part of me that was expressly a part of me that was expressly Lana Wachowski stated that the narrative inspired her following the loss of her parents and a close friend.
“My father died, then this buddy died, and finally my mother died. I had no idea how to deal with this type of loss. I hadn’t seen it up close before… Even though you knew their lives were coming to an end, it was really painful. My intellect always caught up with my imagination, and one night when I was weeping and couldn’t sleep, this entire narrative exploded in my head. I couldn’t have my mother and father, but now I had Neo and Trinity, two of the most important people in my life. It was instantly reassuring to see these two characters living again, and it’s really easy. You may look at him and say, ‘Okay, these two people die; okay, bring these two people back to life; isn’t that good?’ Yes, it was successful! It’s easy; that’s what art and tales do: they soothe us “, Wachowski stated regarding their resuscitation in the film.
In The Matrix: Resurrections, how will Neo and Trinity reappear?
As previously stated, Neo and Trinity died in The Matrix Revolutions, the third film in the franchise. Despite this, we had some indications that the characters may return from the original first Matrix film (1999), where a conversation makes references to gaining “another life” and the overall concept of reincarnation – made more obvious by the title The Matrix 4: Resurrections.
In fact, the title of The Matrix: Resurrections implies that not only have these people come to life, but the Matrix’s artificial world has also returned. The Architect (Helmut Bakaitis) mentioned the possibility of resetting the Matrix in The Matrix Reloaded, so it’s possible that the truce between humans and machines at the end of The Matrix Revolutions – which happened thanks to Nao’s sacrifice – didn’t do much good and the machines will be back, but in a different state due to the new times.
The Matrix: Resurrections will be released in theaters on December 22th.
